Child Seats

New regulations governing the use of child car seats came into force on 18 September 2006. We have run advertising from July to September in press, radio and online to advise parent and carers about the new regulations governing the use of child car seats. Stephen Ladyman, Road Safety Minister said:

"Most people make sure that children use some kind of restraint when travelling on the road, but it is vitally important to use the right one; and not to use an adult belt before the child is big enough. "Small children need the protection that baby seats and child seats are designed to provide. Seat belts are designed for adults. Children who have grown out of child seats still need to use booster seats and booster cushions.

"We estimate that these changes could prevent over 2000 child deaths or injuries each year." -> More

Avoiding Low Bridges

Every day, on average, 10 vehicles crash into bridges too low for them, sometimes killing the driver. Many drivers don't seem to know the height of their vehicle, although by law this should be written on a notice in the cab, which they can check to see if it's safe to go under a low bridge. Even when an in-cab height indicator has been fitted, many drivers don't know what it's there for.

If you drive a high vehicle you should:

  • Check the in-cab indicator;
  • Remember your vehicle height;
  • Plan your route to avoid bridges that are too low for you to clear safely;
  • Remember that only bridges with less than 16'3" safe clearance will be marked on a map; and
  • Check the bridge height sign.

Please Note:
Overseas users may notice some small differences in names, for example; in Britain what we call a roundabout maybe called something else in your country. Other than that they should work fine.

Speed CameraYou may consider yourself a careful driver but it is impossible to always concentrate on both driving and the other factors on the road. Speed cameras are part of that and if they catch you, the consequences are 3 points on your licence and at least a £60 fine. Some may argue that 'you should always drive within the speed limit' but you'd be surprised how easy it is to go 5mph over the limit, especially if the road ahead is clear. -> More

What is GPS navigation?Global Positioning System (GPS) is a worldwide radio navigation system that uses 24 satellites that orbit the earth. GPS navigation receivers, like TomTom, That use these satellite signals to calculate it's position to a couple of metres. -> More

Mobile Phones Penalty Update New legislation to increase the penalty for using a hand-held phone whilst driving will come into force on 27 February 2007. The current fine of £30 will increase to £60 and three penalty points on your licence. Penalty points can mean higher insurance costs. If you get six points within two years of passing your test, your licence will be revoked and you will need to re-sit the test. If the case goes to court, you could risk a maximum fine of £1,000, which rises to £2,500 for the driver of a bus, coach, or heavy goods vehicle. -> More
